Obituary of Rev. Julius Kirkland

Rev. Julius Mahlon Kirkland, 91, widower of Agnes Dennard Kirkland passed away Sunday, November 27, 2011 at The Village of Summerville.
Born on October 3, 1920, in Amity, GA, he was a son of the late Rev. Julius Robert Kirkland and the late Maude Matthews Kirkland. Rev. Kirkland was a member of Messiah Baptist Church and was a Mason for more than 60 years. He was an avid golfer and also enjoyed many other sports.
Rev. Kirkland was a retired Baptist Minister having served at numerous churches in South Carolina and Louisiana to include First Baptist Church of Georgetown, First Baptist Church of Port Allen, LA and Messiah Baptist Church. He was also instrumental in the founding of Lakewood Baptist Church, North Hampton Baptist and Pawleys Island Community Church. Rev. Kirkland was a graduate of Mercer University and received a degree in Theology from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He received an Honorary Doctorate from Charleston Southern University where he was a board member of the Founding Board of Trustees.
Survivors include two daughters, Susie Kalinoski (Jeff) of Granville, OH and Cookie Parsons (Bert) of Monks Corner; seven grandchildren, Julius R. Kirkland, II and Jennifer Alene Kirkland both of Georgetown, Katherine Fairman (David) of Columbus, OH, Annie Kalinoski of Granville, OH, Louise Lingerfelt (Brian) of Decatur, GA, Sarah Wright (Ryan) of Smyrna, GA, and Joey Kalinoski of Columbus, OH; five great grandchildren, Sylvia Wright and Auggie Wright both of Smyrna, GA, and Adam Lingerfelt, Seth Lingerfelt and Kirk Lingerfelt all of Decatur, GA; and a sister-in-law, Marybeth Kirkland of Cape Hatteras, NC.
He was preceded in death by a son, Julius R. "Bee" Kirkland, Sr.; and a brother, Dr. William Kirkland.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM Thursday, December 1, 2011 at Messiah Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd Parker and the Rev. Ricky West officiating. Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 PM Wednesday at Graham Funeral Home.
