Obituary of Mary Smith

Mary Alice Pope Smith, loving wife of Bonnie R. Smith, Jr., passed away Saturday November 25, 2023 in her home surrounded by her family. Mrs. Smith’s funeral service will be held 2:00pm Tuesday November 28, 2023 in the sanctuary of Screven Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens. Born October 5, 1941 in Georgetown County, she was a daughter of the late Buie Snow Pope, Jr. and the late Mary Jane Larrimore Pope. Mrs. Smith was a member of Screven Baptist Church and a former Sunday school teacher. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, cooking, and cross-stitching. Most of all she relished the time spent with her family and friends. Surviving, in addition to her husband of 62 years are, one son, Gerald Lynn Smith and his wife Elisa of Anderson; one daughter, Donna Gail Cain and her husband Haynes of Bennettsville; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Inez Lambert of Georgetown, Dianne Poston and her husband David of Georgetown, Juanita Thompson of Hemmingway; three brothers, Lewis Pope and his wife Nellie of Andrews, Charles Pope and his wife Kathy of Hemmingway, Wendell Pope and his wife Geri of Georgetown; and a number of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a grandson, Jon Ashley Smith, a sister, Maudine Poston, and a brother, James Pope.
