Obituary of Joseph Hoyt Lawrimore

Joseph Hoyt Lawrimore, 76, beloved husband of Catherine Douglas Lawrimore died July 15, 2023 at home surrounded by his family. He was an 11 year survivor of glioblastoma brain cancer (GBM).
Born on July 30, 1946 in Hemingway, South Carolina, Joseph was the oldest of three sons of the late Joseph James Lawrimore and Rosa Parnell L. Harrelson.
Joseph was a 1964 graduate of Pleasant Hill High School and Columbia Commercial College in 1966. He proudly served in the United States Air Force 1966-1970, stationed at Keesler AFB, Biloxi, MS, Charleston AFB, Charleston, SC and Saglek Bay, Labrador, Newfoundland.
His work career began with Westinghouse Credit Corp. in Greenville, SC and Atlanta, GA before moving back to Georgetown County, SC where he worked at Georgetown Steel Corp., Murray Cookie Co., and Kellogg’s before retiring.
Joseph loved being on his farm in his spare time, on his tractor planting corn or plowing the fields. He enjoyed hunting, planting a garden, golf, cooking, and any time spent with his family, especially his grandsons, also known as his “Five Guys”.
He co-founded Browns Ferry Daylily Gardens and was a co-owner until 1999 where he hybridized and grew award winning daylilies.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Georgetown, served as a deacon, and a member of the Billy Douglas Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years; daughters Susan Penelope “Penny” (David) Phillips of Greer, SC; Jennifer Catherine (Jerod) Coulter of Mt. Pleasant, SC and five grandsons: Spencer Brady Phillips, Joseph Reese Phillips, John Skylar Phillips, Noah King Coulter and Hoyt King Coulter; one brother, Thomas James “Jim” Lawrimore, several nieces and nephew.
He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Kenneth Earl “Bo” Lawrimore.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at 3:00pm at First Baptist Church of Georgetown, 219 Cleland St., Georgetown, SC. Burial will follow the service in The Old Place Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:30pm – 3:00pm in the church parlor.
