Please share a memory of Evelyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Evelyn Birchenough Hulse passed away on Monday, August 23, 2021. She was the happy wife of William (Bill) Harlan Hulse. She was born in her family home in Trenton NJ on September 29, 1923. She lived with her parents, Ernie and Kay, two brothers and her grandparents. She was a leader at school. In the schoolwide black vs red team challenge she led her team to victory. She also won the Algebra & Homemaker medals. Post-graduation she helped at home and worked as a short order cook. Her future husband became a frequent patron. During WWII, with Bill away, Evelyn continued working and helping out her family. In 1946 they married and moved to Pittsburgh PA. While her husband went to college, Evelyn worked as a telephone operator. Next they moved to the suburbs of Washington DC, where Bill got a job with Westinghouse Corporation, now Northrup Grumman. Evelyn was an involved homemaker raising four children, running a Brownie Troop and Girl Scout Troop and later a church youth group. Once her kids were grown, she taught preschool. Evelyn traveled extensively abroad as part of Bill's work related trips. They enjoyed golf together and in retirement they chose to move to Wedgefield Plantation in South Carolina, a beautiful golf community. They made dear friends and both got involved in their community. Bill got involved with leading the Sports Fishing Association and community HOA. They threw parties and joined in the social events. Evelyn created and chaired the annual Circus of Golf Tournament for about 20 years, with a full field of women golfers attending each year. She has two hole-in-one trophies from her tenure at golf, her last one at 83 years old. Bill predeceased Evelyn by 8 years. She missed him every day. In her 90's Evelyn joined the neighborhood Boat/Social Club and made some new friends. She's known as the pink lady who dances at 90+, who sings fun songs and generally spreads joy. She is the adored mother of four kids, the cool Grandma of 8 grandchildren, the sweetest great Grandma to 9 great grandkids and dear to all the related spouses. In June 2021, she was able to attend a week long family reunion comprised of all of her direct descendants and most of the related spouses. A full life well lived. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 12, 2021 at Manor House Restaurant at Wedgefield Country Club from 6PM-7:30PM. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.grahamfuneralhome.org. . In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in Evelyn’s name to the children’s charity of your choice.
