Obituary of Barbara D. Parks

Barbara Downey Parks, 79, wife of David L. Parks, Sr. passed away peacefully on May 20, 2021 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 29, 2021 at 4PM at Screven Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 3PM. Mrs. Parks was born in Georgetown, SC on February 3, 1942, a daughter of the late Paul Lamar Downey and the late Vera Fulmer Downey. Barbara was a life-long member of Screven Baptist Church and previously worked as a substitute teacher for many years at Maryville Elementary School. She devoted much of her life to caring for abandoned and abused animals. During times of better health, she also enjoyed weekly lunch and breakfast outings with her ladies group. Surviving, in addition to her loving husband of over 59 years are two sons; David L. Parks, Jr. and Kevin L. Parks (Laura) of Murrells Inlet, SC; one grandson Matthew L. Parks (Julianna) of Goose Creek, SC and one granddaughter, Megan E. Parks of Murrells Inlet, SC; numerous nieces, nephews and special friends. Barbara was a dedicated Christian woman. She always tried to put others first. Her family was extremely important to her. In addition to her husband and sons, she especially cherished time spent with her two grandchildren. Barbara was predeceased in death by her parents and a sister, Nan D. Ard. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Coastal Animal Rescue, 1288 Limestone St., Murrells Inlet, SC 29576; or the General Fund of Screven Baptist Church, 2221 South Island Road, Georgetown, SC 29440. Services are entrusted to Graham Funeral Home of Georgetown, SC. Arrangements are incomplete at this time and a memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
