Obituary of Iris Long Matthews

Iris Belle Long Matthews, 92, widow of Elbert William Matthews, Sr., known as “Momma Iris” to many passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at her residence.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2019 at 1PM at First Baptist Church of Georgetown.  The family will receive friends Saturday, November 16, 2019 from 6PM-8PM at Graham Funeral Home.  Burial will immediately follow the service in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.

Born in Williamsburg County on August 24, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Kizzie Belle Long.  Mrs. Matthews was a devoted member of First Baptist Church and the Ruth Sunday School Class.  She managed the Square Deal Clothing Company for many years and provided day care for many children.  She enjoyed cross-stitching and her greatest joy was spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, family, and church family.

Surviving are two sons, William Elbert Matthews, Jr. (Linda) of Johns Island and Leo Jeffrey Matthews of Georgetown; one daughter, Patricia M. Rowland of Murrells Inlet; two grandchildren, Laura Matthews Newkirk of Charleston and William Lee Rowland of Murrells Inlet; one great grandson, Parker Newkirk of Charleston; and many special nieces and nephews.

In addition to her mother and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry David Long and William Long, Jr., and two sisters, Iva Long Lockliear and Lorena Long Ethridge.
