Obituary of Elwin Elmer Scharlau
MSGT Elwin Elmer “Dutch” Scharlau, 82, widower of Mary Virginia Scharlau, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
A memorial service, with military honors, will be held in the Graham Funeral Home Chapel at 5PM on Saturday, August 25, 2018. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
Born in Oakfield, New York on September 4, 1935, he was the son of the late Elmer Charles Scharlau and Rose Mae Roggow Scharlau. Mr. Scharlau served in the Korean war with the United States Navy and in the Vietnam war with the United States Air Force. After serving his country for 22 years, he moved to Albion, New York and served as a Deputy Sheriff for Orleans County. He worked for the Orleans County Sheriff Auxiliary Police from March 1, 1987 to December 1, 1996. After retiring, he and his wife moved to Greenwood and then later Georgetown. He was a beloved father and grandfather and his greatest joy was the time he spent with his family and friends.
Surviving are two sons, Mark Scharlau (Annette) and David Scharlau both of Georgetown; two daughters, Melody Sturkie (Charles) of Georgetown and Dawn Breed (Roger) of Tampa, FL; 8 grandchildren, Haley Scharlau, Phillip Breed, Adam Breed, Stephanie Scharlau, Amber Miller, Cody Rutkowski, Mindy Edge and Joel Edge; 5 great grandchildren, Cole, Jeremiah, Julian, Tristen, and Reese.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Scott Scharlau.
