Obituary of Vernelle Hartley Ackerman

Vernelle Hartley Ackerman, 71, of Georgetown, SC died Friday, April 14, 2017 at Medical University of Charleston. A funeral service, officiated by Rev. Chesley Floyd and Rev. Terry Wilkerson, will be held at Georgetown Church of God on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 2pm. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1pm-2pm at the church. Burial will follow the service at Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens. “Mrs. Vernie” as she was known to many, was born on January 18, 1946 in Georgetown at her aunt’s house. She was the oldest daughter to Manning Hartley Sr. and Katie Ellen Harrell Hartley. She was the wife of the late Frankie Ackerman for forty years. She was a licensed Practical Nurse and worked at Georgetown Memorial Hospital and the Georgetown County schools as a school nurse. She often said that the years as Howard High School’s nurse was her most treasured years working. She retired as a Customer Service Representative after twenty-eight and a half years at Santee Electric Coop. She enjoyed many of her customers and was greeted by so many in the community even after her retirement. She loved reading, knitting, and crocheting in her free time. She loved traveling and several of her most treasured trips were on missions to Honduras and Belize. While in Belize she “adopted” a special family she met and kept in contact with them over the years. Her message she loved to spread was to “Let Jesus be the Lord of your life.” She was a blessed mother and grandmother and is survived by her daughter, Katie Ackerman McKenzie (Leary) of Dillon; her granddaughter Madison McKenzie of Dillon; her brother, James Hartley of Georgetown; two sisters, Grace Miller (Mabrey) and Betty Sue Poston (Tommy); four special aunts, Caretta McClellan, Lou White, Nell Brown, and Mildred Hartley; and many treasured cousins.
