James M. Bassett, Jr., 90, widower of Rosa Neely Bassett, passed away on Friday, June 20, 2014 at Veterans Victory House in Walterboro. Born on April 6, 1924 in Athol, Mass., Mr. Bassett was a son to the late James M. Bassett, Sr. and the late Hazel Newell Bassett. Mr. Bassett was a US Navy veteran having served in WWII and was a member of Screven Baptist Church and the Keystone Sunday school class. He was retired from International Paper Mill and was a member of the Pine Tree Club. Mr. Bassett enjoyed fishing and reading. Survivors include two daughters, Betty B. McLeod and Jeanette B. Duncan (Paul), three grandchildren; Paige Fuhrer (Tim), Courtney Humphries (Robbie) and Kyle Duncan (Jessica), three great grandsons; three great granddaughters; one brother, Norman Bassett of Athol, Mass.; one sister, Helen Jewitt of Athol, Mass.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Monday June 23, 2014 at Screven Baptist Church with Rev. Jason Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Screven Baptist Church, Post Office Box 2776, Georgetown, SC 29440.
