Obituary of Mary Jeannette Cannon

Mary Jeannette Kirton Cannon, widow of Calvin Carnell Cannon, Sr., the chosen daughter of the late Olin David and Leita Sedgwick Kirton, of Lane, SC, died January 19, 2014 at her home. Jeannette was born on February 13, 1929, in Mullins, SC, to the late Cornie Mae Willoughby Israel and William Gordon Alford and was given up for adoption. She found her biological family in 1984. A 1946 graduate of Kingstree High School, she and her husband were married for almost 56 years. Jeannette was a member of Friendfield Presbyterian Church, where she was very active, the Woodmen of the World, a Cub Scout Den Mother in the 1950’s and 60’s, as well as the operator of a nursery in the 1970’s and 80’s until her health forced her to close it. Her hobbies were reading, crocheting, cross stitch, scrapbooking, quilting, and tending to her flowers. Survivors include two sons, Calvin C. Cannon, Jr. (Sarah) of Spartanburg, SC and Gerald Cannon (LuAnn) of Georgetown, SC; one daughter, Dianne C. Pope (Kenny) of Georgetown, SC, seven grandchildren, Jeannette E. "Lisa" Dillard (Christopher), Susan L. Crisafulli (Nicolas), Richard L. Pope (Stacy), Kenneth W. Pope, Jr. (Stacey), Kristi P. Benton (Gregory), Leslie C. Shumard (Jamey), and Mary C. Walker (Luke), fifteen great grandchildren; a sister, Phoebe K. Roquemore; two half sisters, Bernice A. Summerlin and Juanice A. Terry; three half brothers, Malcolm Alford, Lonzo Israel, and J.E. Israel, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her parents, husband, son in law, William L. Sarvis; four half sisters, Irene I. Cook, Esther I. Hiers, Gladys A. Everhardt, and Grace A. Herring; and two half brothers, Leo Israel and Carly Alford. Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Friendfield Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Wednesday at Graham Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friendfield Presbyterian Church. P.O. Box 431, Georgetown SC 29442.
