Obituary of Donald Stokes

Donald R. Stokes, 93, of Georgetown, formerly of Greer, passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Tidelands Community Hospice House. A native of Greer, he was the son of the Clarence H. and Gladys Green Stokes. Mr. Stokes was a member of Greer First Baptist Church and was the owner and operator of Poinsett Restaurant in Greer for 32 years before retiring in 1979. He served in WWII with the 178th Field Artillery Battalion, Battery A Greer Division, in England, Africa, Sicily and Italy from 1942 – 1945. Survivors include one son, D. Richard Stokes, II of Greenville, SC; one daughter and son in law, Ann S. and Dr. Ted Sherrill of Georgetown; two grandchildren, John A. Sherrill of Bozeman, Mt. and Jennifer S. Holly (Robert) of Athens, GA. He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Violet S. Stokes; one brother, Julian H. Stokes, two sisters, Helen S. Ross and Harriette S. Wade. A graveside service will be held at 2 PM Monday, April 8, 2013 in Wood Memorial Park in Duncan with Dr. Ted Sherrill officiating.
