Obituary of Landy Avant, Jr.
Landy Wood Avant, Jr., 86, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 20, 2017.
A funeral service, officiated by Rev. Dr. Dora Gafford, will be held on Friday, June 23, 2017 at 11:30am at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 9:30am-11:15am in the Duncan UMC Family Life Center. Interment, with military honors and masonic rites, will immediately follow the service and be held in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.
Born in Georgetown, SC on October 10, 1930, he was a son of the late Landy Wood Avant, Sr. and the late Mary Ella Grier Avant.
Mr. Avant was U.S. Navy veteran who served on the USS Donner during the Korean War. He was the owner of Landy’s Cleaners and Georgetown Auto Parts Inc. “Napa”. Mr. Avant was a devoted member of Duncan United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of Winyah Masonic Lodge #40 for over 50 years. He loved and served his community in many capacities, one being his service on the Georgetown Housing Authority Board. Mr. Avant was a USC graduate and an avid Gamecock football fan who enjoyed sharing his love of the game with his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Georgetown Rotary and Ribbon Club. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and brother who will be dearly missed.
Surviving are two sons, Landy Wood “Woody” Avant III (Joye) and Donald T. “Toby” Avant (Morgan), both of Georgetown, SC; one daughter, Terry Grier Avant of Murrells Inlet, SC; four grandchildren, Matthew Wood Avant, Hanna Grace Avant, Thomas Clayton Avant, Foster Wood Avant, all of Georgetown, SC; one brother, Dr. William Earl “Bill” Avant (Eleanor); one special son, Charlie Davis III; many nieces and nephews; and Melinda Bell.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Patricia B. “Patsy” Avant; his granddaughter, Ella Grier Avant; three sisters, Vernice “Bunny” Avant Wilson, Mildred Avant Juk, Frances “Frankie” Avant Dodd; and two brothers, James Dalvin Avant, Sr. and Louis “Ray” Remson Avant.
The family is currently receiving guests at 208 Cannon Street.
