Obituary of William Travis Harter

William Travis “Bill” Harter, 87, passed away Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. Born April 29, 1928 in Florence County, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Alfred H. Harter and Phenie Severance Harter. Mr. Harter was a devoted member of Herbert Memorial United Methodist Church, United Methodist Men’s Fellowship, and the L and M Bunn Sunday School Class. He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War, where he served as a paratrooper with the 82 Airborne. He was a life member of the VFW Post 6444 and a member of the American Legion Post 114 where he served as Sergeant of Arms. He retired from International Paper Company after 35 years of service and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He loved helping others and spent his free time hunting, fishing and gardening. Surviving are two sons, Mark (Teresa) Harter of Georgetown and Bryan Harter (Judy) of Pawleys Island; two grandsons, Allen Marcus Harter and Travis Ross Harter; a sister, Kathleen Harter Kirkland; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy B. Harter and his brothers, James Harter, Harold Harter, Bernard Harter, Robert Harter, and Gordon Guy Harter, Marion Harter. A visitation will be held at Graham Funeral Home on Saturday, January 9, 2016 from 6-8pm. A funeral service with military honors, officiated by Pastor Marie Nuckles, will be held at Herbert Memorial United Methodist Church on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at 2pm. Burial will follow the service at Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Legion Post 114 at 75 Church Street, Georgetown SC 29440 or VFW Post 6444 at 711 Church Street, Georgetown SC 29440.
